Kolossi was built in the 13th century by the knights of the Saint-Jean Order of Jerusalem.

The latter, driven out of Palestine by the Arabs, found refuge in Cyprus, before settling on the island of Rhodes, then in Malta where they became better known under the name of the knights of the Order of Malta.
